Hi,

I think there is a problem with synching the/my comments with the mailing list. Could this be related to my username being changed?
I remember that another comment took a few days to appear so I don't know if this was done by hand or automated. Yesterday I answered a question via the forum and it is only visible here.

(I can change my username to something in Latin alphabet if that helps)

If you give me more details:
subject?
date sent?
message id in forum?

Then I can try to check what happened...

Edit:
If you talk about this message:
https://qubes-os.info/index.php?t=msg&goto=1203&#msg _1203

The forum logs states that a mail has been ~instaltly sent to google mail servers...
But I can confirm, I never received that.

As I do not have admin rights on the mailing list, I can't check that side.
and AFAIK the Qubes team are not moderating the list at all.

If it happens again, I will try to debug by keeping the SMTP responses.

It's just not working for me:
I posted a comment here (recommending to use the user forum) :
https://qubes-os.info/index.php?t=msg&th=650&goto=25 81&#msg_2581

In my experience it will take several days until it appears in the mailing list but of course, everyone has moved on.

Yea, I see this before.

But again:
According to the forum mail logs, the google servers take your post.
From that point I have no control.

While others have no such issues.
Probably depends on the (faked) from address, as the domains can define what IPs are allowed to use that domain as a sender:
https://support.google.com/a/answer/33786?hl=en

If this is widely used, can brake this "two way sync" model badly. Sad

and here it is

The following IP addresses are taken from the includes and IP4/IP6 directives within this domains SPF record.
protonmail.ch.
_spf.protonmail.ch
37.35.106.36
37.35.106.40
185.70.40.0/24

Only those IP's allowed to use the protonmail.ch domain as a sender address.
This means If google take it seriously, no mail will arrive from this forum if the user has a protonmail.ch mail address.

That is the reason why google itself using a workaround for this issue.
Just check one of your mail headers from the list

Thanks for the explanation. So, am I correct that this is an issue with Google and Protonmail? Would every Protonmail user be affected the same way? I've even been using a Swiss VPN but of course with another IP. Or might that add to the problem?

The solution would the the same as the google workaround:
the formum should send mail that way:
- the "From" address is a combination of it's own mail domain and the username
- include "X-Original-From" with the original sender address.

As the X-Original-From is a standard header, all mailk client should handle it well.
The side effect would be that the mailing list would see your post as it would sent by a different person.

This requires the modification of the mail composing code.
(the mail fetching code already prepared for this by my patch)

Will see if I have time to do it in the near future...

The issue is that this forum (IP) is not authorized to send mails from the protonmail's own domain.
(Technically it is a fake mail, using the same loophole like the spammers do)

And not only the protonmail affected, but all the mail donains using strict SPF policies.

Waking up this thread: I think that you broke it as I was able to post here in Jan and posts immediately appeared in mail list, four days ago I posted this reply here: https://qubes-os.info/index.php?t=msg&th=646&goto=29 26&#msg_2926 and it still has not appeared?? Getting stale now. I post here as I avoid G wherever I can and my mail domain & ip don't match so guessing always get quarantined on the mail list.
thanks, Eric

The problem was that only the qubes-users was set to sync to the mailing list - by mistake.

Fixed now.

Thanks Zrubi, however it seems sync has been broken since shortly after you made the patch - no updates to qubes-users here for a week now. Can you fill in the gaps? Has this facility been officially turned off?
Thanks, Eric
